On Tuesday, June 4, 2024, renowned sailor and world record holder for the Atlantic crossing, Matteo Miceli, along with his wife Corinna Massimi, met with students of our school. Fresh from their long sea voyage around the world, Matteo and Corinna enthralled the young audience with tales of the extraordinary adventures they had during their three-year journey. Their stories took the students to remote atolls in the Pacific Ocean, among marvelous marine creatures, into the simple homes of smiling and welcoming communities, and amidst the dangers of pirate attacks. They also spurred reflection on serious environmental issues, such as the pervasive presence of plastic in remote areas far from the consumerism of our society.
This journey narrative was not just about geography but also, and more importantly, about human experience. As our guests emphasized, traveling helps us understand that there is more to the world than just our own language and culture. Recognizing diversity as a resource can help us to build a better society.
