Driving Change: Our School’s Journey on the Road to a Greener Future
"We are on a highway to climate hell with our foot still on the accelerator,” stated the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres during the COP-27 event in Sharm el-Sheik in November 2022. As time is running out we must quickly reverse course and take the “Road to Green Future”. This is not just a metaphor, but the title of a new Erasmus+ project that the Corrado Melone school in Italy has joined in partnership with the Daugavpils 16. Vidussloka school in Latvia, the Borsa Istanbul Etimesgut Suvari Ortaokulu school in Turkey, and Alpe, a Spanish NGO focused on education, training, and cultural promotion.
The project, in line with European environmental sustainability policies and responsible practices, aims to raise awareness and inspire the new generation in taking action against environmental pollution and climate change. In order to acquire new skills in climate coaching, teachers from the involved countries will meet, interact and exchange good teaching practices during the 18 months of the project.
The first joint staff training will take place in Valencia, Spain, from September 18-22, 2023, and will be organized by the non-governmental association, Alpe, who will provide a week-long training course on ecological pedagogy and learning approaches in climate education.
We expect to achieve great benefits and outcomes from this project. We hope to gain new teaching and learning methodologies, enrich our knowledge and understanding of sustainable development, incorporate environmental and social responsibility themes into the school curriculum, and finally to involve the whole community in a program to fight climate change.
Although the road is long and requires huge changes, we are confident that we can create a sustainable and thriving world by building an active and environmentally responsible citizenship together. The team of committed teachers from the Corrado Melone School look forward to starting the “Green Journey” with their partners in September.
