The “Corrado Melone” Comprehensive Institute can be considered an eco-friendly school, it has always been committed to climate awareness and environmental crisis. It has strived to foster a new culture of sustainability capable of training young people towards conscious and ethical choices in consumption, lifestyles, mobility, energy saving and waste reduction.
Since 2018 our school has been "plastic free": there are various drinking water dispensers that allow each student to fill their own water bottle for free, avoiding the purchase of plastic bottles. Over the years, we have carried out numerous activities to promote the development of "green" skills: from waste separation in each classroom, to the construction and farming of an educational garden and the planting of trees and plants in all available green spaces. Furthermore, educational outings and beach cleanups in the nature reserves of Torre Flavia and Macchiatonda with biology and environmental education experts have been carried out yearly. More recently, special events, such as "To school by bike" and the first "Friday for Future" organized in the Green Classroom (a classroom en plein air), have been organized.
Certainly science, technology, geography and civics classes are also essential to learn about the issues concerning the environment and the main factors that generate them, but it is necessary to implement a process of transition from theoretical knowledge to environmental awareness. This is the new challenge that awaits our next school year: the EU project European Union Erasmus+ "Road to Green Future."
A team of enthusiastic and highly motivated teachers from "Corrado Melone" will follow a training course in Spain, together with partners from Latvia and Turkey, to acquire skills in eco-friendly approaches, idea innovations, awareness-raising techniques and best practices, and provide subsequently "climate coaching" to the students, increasing their knowledge, skills, attitudes, awareness and actions in the fight against climate change; in this way it will be possible to transform the theoretical knowledge about climate science into long-term behaviours.
The intent will be to create a true ecological culture in our school community where everyone is aware, responsible and above all able to act together toward a more sustainable future.
